Correspondence and Subject Files 1949-1988 1981-1988

This series contains records generated and retained by the Secretary for East Asia of The American Lutheran Church's Division for World Mission and Inter-Church Cooperation. They pertain primarily to TALC involvement in ministry in what was termed the "China Area." This area included Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC), but this series also included records pertaining to North Korea and Japan. They were kept in this series to maintain the original order found in the accessions that comprise the majority of these records. This series contain little material on the PRC. Records are from 1949-1988 with the bulk dating from 1981-1988. Record types include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, agenda, financial records and statements, topical papers, circular letters, press releases, newsletter articles, printed reports, consultation minutes, booklets, and pamphlets. The majority of records is business correspondence. Subject matter for this correspondence includes disbursement of funds held in trust for work with the Lutheran Missions Home and Agency and the American School, Kinkungshan; appointments and agenda for the China Area Coordinating Committee; copies of Lutheran Church in America correspondence related to new leadership in the Chinese Rhenish Church; personnel matters for TALC missionaries serving in Hong Kong and Taiwan; administrative matters for The American Lutheran Church-Hong Kong Mission (ALC-HK) and the Taiwan Lutheran Missionary Association (TLMA); administrative matters for the Taiwan Lutheran Church (TLC) regarding the Chiayi Christian Hospital and the TLC pension fund; and financial arrangements for consultation on Christianity in North Korea. The principal author of this correspondence is the Rev. M. Douglas Swendseid, Secretary for East Asia. Other records include financial reports and statements for TALC missions in Hong Kong and Taiwan; TLC budgets; financial records for funds held in trust; and reports from consultation on Christianity in North Korea as well as Asian communication strategies. Of note, the folders labeled "Chu Kwei Chih Trust" and "Mrs. Chu The Chen, Peoples' Republic of China (PRC)" pertain to the same person and involve efforts to locate a woman who was to receive funds from a trust established for a Chinese national who was raised by a deaconess missionary to China.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church.
